Tomatin Distillery
Tomatin Distillery is located south of Inverness in the Monadhliath Mountains. It is one of Scotland’s highest distilleries and has a long history of large-scale production and award-winning whisky.
Since 1897 Tomatin Distillery has been harnessing the soft waters of the Alt-na-Frith, to produce quality single malt and blended whisky in an area of stunning natural beauty. Tomatin has a rich whisky making heritage dating back to at least the 1500s.
About Tomatin Distillery
Founded in 1897, Tomatin became one of the largest whisky producers in Scotland during the 20th century. Today it focuses on quality-driven production, offering a range of single malts including lightly peated expressions.
Located just outside the village that shares its name, at 315 metres above sea level, Tomatin Distillery is one of the highest distilleries in Scotland. Its elevated position in the Monadhliath Mountains means the Alt-na-Frith gathers very few minerals on its course, making it the perfect source to create a soft and delicate whisky.

Podcast
In the January 2025 episode of the Distillery Tours podcast we spoke to Libby-Jo Dempster, Visitor Centre Team Leader at Tomatin Distillery.
Libby-Jo tells us about Tomatin’s long and illustrious history, once the largest distillery in the world in the mid 70s it was producing some 12.5million litres of alcohol in a year!
The 23 stills used back then have since become a more modest 12 - with the focus of the distillery now very much quality over quantity as evidenced in the variety of delicious malts Libby-Jo also talks us through.
