Date with a Dram: Glen Ord

This month's competition is with the Glen Ord Distillery to win a bottle of their Singleton Exclusive.

Richly flavoured, vibrant and smooth with a balancing spiciness, this ageless Singleton of Glen Ord has real presence.

On the palate the texture is embracing and smoothly creamy. The taste, sweet at heart, dries gently in time. Toothsome and well balanced, it suggests fruit-laced toffee cut with warming, vibrant white pepper spice.

Competition Time!

Venue of the month: The Globe Inn

The Globe Inn in Dumfries has a rich history that has been preserved for generations to come and enjoy after a lengthy and sympathetic refurbishment of this stunning building first established in 1610.

The Inn's history will send a shiver down your spine. Tour the rooms preserved as they would have been during the patronage of world-famous poet Robert Burns who ate, slept and held court here in his remit as local exciseman. Many original artefacts still remain and you can even sit in his chair and recite poetry where the bard once did himself.

The Globe has several private and general dining facilities. Parties can dine around Burns’ very own dining table and enjoy a seven-course extravaganza where Michelin experienced chefs prepare fresh local produce which you can enjoy with a wide range of beers, fine wines and cocktails. Or perhaps choose a dram from the whisky list which boasts over 250 bottles of malts and blends from around the world.

Distillery of the Month: Lindores Abbey

Lindores Abbey Distillery

After a break of 523 years, spirit is once again flowing from the copper stills at Lindores Abbey. With Lindores Abbey’s widely recognised links to the earliest written reference to Scotch Whisky the team at Lindores has been learning as much as they can from the great Scottish distillers around them, past and present, to bring a very modern whisky-making approach to this ancient site.

The The Apothecary Experience sounds particularly interesting, where visitors are given the chance to get ‘hands on’ in making their own delicious version of Aqua Vitae, using herbs, spices and spirit tinctures such as cleavers, lemon verbena, douglas fir and sweet cicely, all of which grow in the distillery's gardens.

You will choose which flavours you like and will use them to make your very own Aqua Vitae Spirit – all under the watchful eye of the distillery's Apothecary. Combining the history of distilling with the science of how to produce malt spirits, you will be taken all the way through the spirit blending process.

Find out more about Lindores Abbey, their whisky and tours on their dedicated page on the DistilleryTours.scot website.
