Glenfiddich Distillery Experience
I recently had the absolute pleasure of returning to Glenfiddich Distillery in Dufftown, in the heart of Speyside, and it certainly didn't disappoint. This time I was fortunate enough to be shown around by the excellent Tino Took, VIP and Guide Team Leader, whose knowledge and passion for Glenfiddich made it a particularly memorable visit. And the whisky wasn't too bad either! Thankfully, driver's drams were available.
There are few places in Scotland that capture the spirit of whisky quite like Glenfiddich. Set among the rolling hills and picturesque villages of Speyside, the distillery is steeped in history. It was here that William Grant established Glenfiddich in 1887, and remarkably, it remains family-owned and family-run to this day. With its traditional stone buildings and iconic pagoda roofs, it's a wonderful place to visit before you've even sampled a dram.
I've visited many distilleries over the years, but there's always something special about getting behind the scenes of whisky production. From the milling of malted barley and the fermentation process to the impressive copper stills and maturation warehouses, it's fascinating to see the craftsmanship that goes into producing a single malt enjoyed around the world.
What made this visit particularly enjoyable was having Tino on hand to share the stories behind Glenfiddich. His knowledge of the distillery, the Grant family and the whisky-making process was exceptional, but just as importantly, his enthusiasm was infectious. It's the people you meet on these visits who often make the biggest impression, and Tino certainly did that.
Of course, no visit to Glenfiddich would be complete without talking about the whisky. From the fresh, fruity character of the 12 Year Old, with its distinctive pear notes, to the richer and more complex expressions further up the range, Glenfiddich has an impressive collection of single malts. There's something particularly enjoyable about exploring the different flavours and discovering how maturation influences the character of the spirit.
While I was lucky enough to enjoy a specially hosted visit with Tino, Glenfiddich also offers a range of bookable distillery experiences for visitors looking to discover the distillery for themselves. Whether you're relatively new to Scotch whisky or already a seasoned enthusiast, there are opportunities to learn about Glenfiddich's history, explore its whisky-making traditions and enjoy guided tastings. More in-depth experiences are also available for those wanting to take their whisky journey a little further.
One thing I particularly admire about Glenfiddich is the way it manages to combine its remarkable heritage with a welcoming and accessible visitor experience. Despite being one of the world's best-known single malt whiskies, there's still a genuine sense of family history and pride in what they do. It's clear that the people working there are passionate about both the distillery and the whisky they produce.
For anyone planning a trip to Speyside, I would strongly recommend putting Glenfiddich on your itinerary. Dufftown is a fantastic base for exploring this famous whisky-producing region, and a visit to Glenfiddich offers the chance to discover one of Scotland's most celebrated distilleries.
A huge thank you to Tino for taking the time to show me around and for making my return visit such an enjoyable one. It's always a pleasure to visit Glenfiddich, and I'm already looking forward to the next opportunity.
If you're thinking about visiting yourself, take a look at Glenfiddich's range of distillery tours and tastings. There's plenty to discover, and whether it's your first visit or your fifth, I'm sure you'll find something to enjoy.
