Pulteney Distillery – The Making of the Maritime Malt Experience

I was delighted to be invited to Pulteney Distillery to record a podcast with the brilliant Daniel Ross, celebrating Pulteney’s 200th anniversary, and to experience The Making of the Maritime Malt Experience. Located in Wick, on the far north coast of Scotland, it offers something a little different from many distilleries.

One of the things that always stands out when visiting a distillery is the people who bring the story to life. The knowledge and friendliness of the team can make a good tour a great one, and with Daniel as our guide, the experience was certainly elevated. His knowledge of the distillery, its history and the whisky-making process was exceptional.

Another thing I love about visiting some of Scotland’s older distilleries is the connection to traditional methods. Pulteney still retains many of its hands-on processes, and throughout the tour there was a real appreciation for the craftsmanship involved. In fact, I think I only spotted one laptop during my entire visit!

Following the tour, we were taken to the cosy tasting room where we sampled four whiskies from Pulteney’s core range (selection may vary), including Harbour, the Old Pulteney 12 Year Old, 15 Year Old and one of my personal favourites, the 18 Year Old. The tasting was the perfect way to finish the experience, giving visitors the opportunity to appreciate how the maritime influence, traditional production methods and maturation come together in the glass.

With Pulteney celebrating its 200th anniversary, there has never been a better time to visit and discover the story behind this iconic Highland coastal distillery. As always, I would recommend booking in advance to avoid disappointment.
