Wolfburn Distillery
As the owner of distillerytours.scot, I’m lucky enough to visit many of Scotland’s fantastic distilleries. I’ve enjoyed some memorable tours over the years, but can honestly say the experience at Wolfburn Distillery in Thurso stands out as one of the most generous and enjoyable I’ve had.
From the moment the tour began, it was clear this was something special. Not only were we treated to a fascinating insight into the distillery’s history and production process, but the tasting element was particularly impressive with five generous drams in total. These included expressions from their core range alongside their excellent 10-year-old and 12-year-old whiskies. A personal highlight for me was the slightly peated Morven, named after the local mountain – a beautifully balanced dram with just the right touch of smoke.
Nestled on the outskirts of Thurso, Wolfburn may not be the largest distillery you’ll visit, but what it lacks in size it more than makes up for in warm Highland hospitality. The setting itself adds to the charm, giving you a real sense of connection to the landscape and the heritage behind the spirit.
I had the pleasure of being guided by Wilma, whose knowledge and enthusiasm brought the whole experience to life. Her passion for Wolfburn and whisky in general was evident throughout, making the tour both informative and lots of fun too!
I’ve long been a fan of Wolfburn’s whiskies, but this visit has firmly cemented it as one of my favourite distilleries to recommend. If you haven’t tried their range yet, I’d strongly encourage you to do so. If you’re planning a trip to the far north of Scotland, Wolfburn Distillery is absolutely worth a visit, it’s a fantastic example of modern Scottish distilling done right, while still respecting tradition.
