Distillery and Whisky News May 2023 - Benromach

Hello whisky lovers, and welcome to our May edition of Distillery and Whisky News.

World Whisky Day is just round the corner, the date for your diary if you would like to mark the occasion is 20th May! Personally, I don't need an excuse to treat myself to a new bottle or partake in a dram (or two) - but there's something about World Whisky Day and the excitement it generates that makes me fall in love with whisky all over again - once a year, every year.

If you're looking for ways to celebrate then consider a visit to Carnoustie to enjoy the unique set up at Angus Alchemy. You'll see below that it has plenty to offer us whisky-lovers as well as those we 'drag' along with us thanks to its vast and varied spirits list.

Until next time...

Distillery Of The Month: Benromach

Benromach Distillery

Benromach is a traditional Speyside distillery owned by a family of whisky-lovers intent on making single malt the right way with true character. They like to keep things simple with a handful of distillers relying entirely on their expertise and senses to make the finest handmade whisky; Speyside single malt matured exclusively in first-fill casks, with a subtly smoky character. It takes just four ingredients – barley, water, yeast and a human touch.

All casks are hand-filled, individually weighed, stencilled by hand and stowed in traditional dunnage warehouses. Why? Because at Benromach they believe making whisky by hand guarantees genuine character.

The distillery's Heritage Tour sounds a cracker - learn firsthand about the rich heritage of Benromach before enjoying a tutored tasting of its liquid history - a range of unique and rare whiskies, personally selected by the Distillery Manager. Sit back and relax with your drams, while your host regales you with tales of Benromach past and present.

Venue of the month: Angus Alchemy

Angus Alchemy

Angus Alchemy takes innovation into outstretched arms and gives it a big, sweaty, end-of-the-night embrace. Maybe for just a wee bit longer than is comfortable! Its owners say: "We took a risk and built a distillery on our own terms featuring cutting-edge design, operations… and, of course, high-quality spirits. In return, we’re able to use words like ‘cutting-edge’ and ‘high-quality’ like some kind of Silicon valley wunderkind giving a keynote."

At Angus Alchemy you will find a down-to-earth brand of progressiveness where the focus is on making world-class gin, rum, moonshine and offering up an unforgettable visitor experience. When it comes to tasting experiences, this is where things really open up at Angus Alchemy. With more spirits than an exorcist’s ‘to do’ list, every visit is as unique as the stuff that lines the bar.

We like the sound of The Alchemist, where you can enjoy four rare expressions from the Angus Alchemy range of Moonshine and gins and of course The Albannach which includes a flight of five carefully chosen whiskies from each Scottish region.

This 10-year-old single malt marks a significant milestone in the history of the distillery: it is the first ever age-statement release.
