Glasshouse Hotel

A Historic Setting with a Modern Twist

Located in the heart of Edinburgh, The Glasshouse blends contemporary luxury with historical charm. The building, a renovated Free Church, seamlessly marries old-world elegance with modern design. Upon arrival, we were welcomed into the striking lobby where crisp lines and vibrant lighting contrast beautifully with the gothic church façade. A complimentary glass of prosecco set the tone for what would be an indulgent and memorable stay.

Beyond its impressive aesthetics, The Glasshouse enjoys a prime location next to the historic Playhouse Theatre, making it an excellent choice for culture lovers. But for those who prefer the sensory delights of a fine single malt over a musical extravaganza, the hotel offers an even greater allure.

The Glasshouse boasts 17 luxurious suites, each named after a renowned whisky or whisky region. These rooms are designed to capture the essence of Scotland’s most iconic whiskies, from the peaty notes of Islay to the rich, honeyed warmth of the Highlands. Each suite provides a unique experience, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the character and heritage of their chosen region without leaving the comfort of their room.

The Snug: A Whisky Haven

The Snug

At the heart of The Glasshouse is The Snug, a whisky lover’s paradise. This cosy retreat is home to an extensive collection of over 200 whiskies, housed in a sleek, glass-fronted display. We were impressed with its intimate atmosphere that boasted a roaring fire pit and selection of board games - all of which make The Snug is a perfect place to while away the evening with a dram in hand.

All those whiskies may make decision making somewhat problematic, but whether you’re a seasoned connoisseur or new to the world of whisky, the knowledgeable staff are on hand to guide you through the impressive selection. With its warm and relaxed ambiance, it’s easy to see why any whisky enthusiast would feel right at home here - we certainly did.

Tapas and Tamdhu: A Whisky Tasting Experience

Tamdhu drams

During our stay, we attended a whisky tasting event - Tapas and Tamdhu which featured an expertly curated selection from the esteemed Speyside distillery. Led by Ian MacLeod Distillers’ Experiential Brand Ambassador, Gordon Dallas, the evening was as entertaining as it was educational. Having listened to various podcasts with the great man (two of which were conducted by DistilleryTours.scot’s very own David Riddell), I was excited to hear him speak in the flesh – and I wasn’t disappointed.

The tasting lineup included Tamdhu’s 12, 15, and 18-year-old expressions, plus a surprise fourth dram - because when it comes to whisky, who’s really counting? Paired with an exquisite selection of tapas, the experience was nothing short of exceptional.

Dishes included Serrano ham carved straight from the bone, bacon-wrapped figs (a personal favourite), patatas bravas, fresh bread with Catalan-inspired dips, and indulgent, melt-in-the-mouth croquettes. The diverse mix of attendees - from whisky aficionados to curious newcomers - added to the convivial atmosphere, with guests from Scotland, England, America, and even South Africa all united by their shared love (and curiosity) of whisky.

Rest and Relaxation in a Whisky-Themed Retreat

After an evening of fine whisky and food, our room offered the perfect retreat. Just a short walk from The Snug, the newly renovated room exuded luxury from the moment we stepped inside. The expansive floor-to-ceiling windows flooded the space with natural light and overlooked the hotel’s unique rooftop garden, complete with outdoor furniture for those wishing to enjoy an alfresco dram.

The bathroom was equally impressive - so spacious, in fact, that we joked there was enough room for a tap-dancing performance. A freestanding bath, double basins and a separate shower added to the sense of indulgence. Meanwhile, modern amenities such as a DAB radio/speaker, Nespresso machine and minibar ensured every comfort was catered for.

One of the standout features was the artwork by local artist Liana Moran. Our room showcased a striking depiction of stacked whisky casks - a piece so impressive that I would happily have taken it home.

Exciting Whisky Events on the Horizon

The Glasshouse is set to host a series of exclusive whisky events throughout the year, featuring partnerships with some of Scotland’s most revered distilleries, including Glengoyne, Glen Scotia, Balvenie, and Glenfiddich.

Another unique tasting event that took place recently was Sketch and a Scotch, which paired an Isle of Raasay whisky tasting with a sketching session led by artist Liana Moran. Guests sipped on delicious Raasay drams while receiving expert guidance on capturing whisky-inspired imagery - making it a creative and immersive way to experience both whisky and art.

Next on the calendar is Whisky & Cigar – A Dalmore & Davidoff Experience. Taking place on 1st May, this will be an exclusive evening of indulgence where those attending will enjoy a selection of Dalmore whisky alongside Davidoff cigars. This floating event will see whisky-lovers move between the cosy setting of The Snug and the rooftop terrace, where breathtaking views of Edinburgh set the scene for a truly refined experience. Whether by the fire or under the open sky, take the time to relax and appreciate life’s finer pleasures.

With management keen to explore new and exciting ways to engage whisky tourists and newcomers alike, The Glasshouse is cementing its reputation as one of Edinburgh’s top destinations for whisky lovers. Whether you’re a lifelong enthusiast or someone just beginning to appreciate Scotland’s national drink, this hotel offers an experience as rich and rewarding as the finest single malt.
