A visit to The Glendronach Distillery earlier this summer gave me the opportunity to record a podcast with Global Brand Ambassador Stewart Buchanan before discovering the distillery's Valley of the Brambles Experience.

If you've never visited The Glendronach, I'd strongly recommend adding it to your whisky travel bucket list. Nestled in the beautiful Valley of Forgue, near where the River Deveron winds through the Highland landscape, the distillery is every bit as picturesque as you would imagine. Established in 1826, it has spent two centuries perfecting the art of sherry cask maturation, and you can feel that history the moment you arrive.

The Valley of the Brambles Experience begins with a guided tour of the distillery before taking visitors into one of The Glendronach's traditional dunnage warehouses. Seeing rows of maturing casks resting in these atmospheric warehouses is always one of my favourite parts of any distillery visit, and learning more about how sherry casks influence the rich character of The Glendronach's whiskies makes the experience even more fascinating.

The tour's name is more than just a clever title. 'Glendronach' is associated with the Valley of the Brambles, reflecting both the meaning of the distillery's name and the rugged Aberdeenshire landscape that surrounds it.

The experience finishes in the distillery's welcoming tasting room, where we sampled three whiskies from the flagship range. On my visit these included The Glendronach 12 Year Old, 15 Year Old and 18 Year Old expressions, although the line-up may vary. It was a fantastic opportunity to compare how different periods of maturation in exceptional sherry casks create layers of dried fruit, spice and rich oak character.

Lasting around an hour and priced at £25 (July 2026), The Valley of the Brambles Experience offers excellent value and provides a wonderful introduction to one of Scotland's great Highland distilleries. Whether you're discovering The Glendronach for the first time or returning to explore its remarkable history, this is a tour that deserves a place on every whisky lover's itinerary.

Celebrating 200 Years of The Glendronach

There has never been a better time to visit, as 2026 marks The Glendronach's 200th anniversary. To celebrate two centuries of sherry cask craftsmanship, the distillery is hosting a series of special events throughout August, giving visitors the opportunity to experience its heritage in unique ways.

The celebrations begin with the Bicentennial Ceilidh on 14 August, an evening of traditional Scottish music, dancing and whisky for £30 per person, honouring both the Valley of the Brambles and founder James Allardice.

On 15 August, visitors can enjoy The Glendronach Gathering, a free day celebrating the distillery's bicentenary with live music, local food, archive displays, complimentary tours and bookable whisky experiences.

For those looking for something truly unforgettable, Master Blender Dr Rachel Barrie will host an exclusive three-day Bicentennial Celebration from 28 to 30 August. This premium experience includes behind-the-scenes access, exceptional tastings and a rare opportunity to explore the distillery alongside one of the whisky industry's most respected figures.

If you're planning a whisky trip to Speyside or Aberdeenshire this year, I'd highly recommend making time for The Glendronach.
