North Speyside tour

Find out more about the distilleries and our recommendations of things to see and do in this area. Use the icons beside each distillery to create your perfect trip, and tag us on Facebook or Instagram with photos of your whisky journey!

This tour incorporates the Dallas Dhu, Benromach, Glen Moray, Benriach and Glen Grant Distilleries.

Speyside is a whisky distillery mecca, but not so many are open for tours. This North Speyside tour covers the five most northern distillery tours in Speyside. That’s five of 17 distilleries close-by, so look out for plenty more whiskies of the region as you’re out and about. The area of Speyside has a total of 54 distilleries – check out our ‘South Speyside and East Speyside tours’ for something lengthier. Please note, we don’t include all these distilleries on our map, as we focus on the tours.

Theme: North Speyside
Duration: 5 days

If you’re starting in the north, the Dallas Dhu and Benromach distilleries are an eight minute drive apart, so you can easily fit them into one day if you’re stretched for time.

Logie Steading

Us, we like to savour each distillery, let our palettes relax between sittings… so if you’re spreading them across two days like us, why not dilly dally a little longer and visit Logie Steading, which boasts a shopping village (including a whisky shop), visitor centre, acclaimed cafe and gardens. And if you really want to take your time, they even do salmon fishing on the River Findhorn.

Lossiemouth

Lossiemouth is an absolute must-visit when you are in this neck of the woods, known as the Jewel Of The Moray Firth it lives and breathes golf and is home to two beautiful sandy beaches. The two beaches, one to the east and one to the west, flank the harbour and much of this coastal town is on a cliff top with stunning views out to sea. At West Beach you will see the iconic Covesea Lighthouse (pictured) and which can be found next to Moray Golf Course, East Beach meets the town at the mouth of the River Lossie with sand dunes that stretch the length of the beach. Covesea Lighthouse was opened to the general public as a visitor attraction in 2013, the views are amazing with much to be seen by way of wild animals, birds and plants. The neighbouring RAF base is best viewed from the top of the lighthouse, military aircraft flights are a real highlight for enthusiasts and casual visitors alike.

Morayvia STEP

Heading east, next are the Glen Moray Distillery (check out their dedicated page for more information on their tours and how they've been distilling since 1897) and Benriach Distillery in Elgin (visit their dedicated page to hear about their tastings and tours). On the way there, stop at the Morayvia Science and Technology Experience Project (STEP), which brings together aerospace, astronomy, technology and arts-related activities. What does that mean? It’s got some pretty impressive helicopters and light aircraft, find out more here.

Mossend Farm and Alpaca Farm Shop

Or if you fancy something a bit more touchy-feely, take an alpaca tour at Mossend Farm and their Alpaca Farm Shop.

Speyside Cooperage - don't miss it

The fifth distillery on the tour is the Glen Grant Distillery in Rothes, around 25 minutes’ drive south from Elgin (find out more about their tours on their dedicated page). After the distillery, the Speyside Cooperage should be absolutely top of your list of things to visit – their tour takes you through the lifecycle of the cask, shows you the incredible skill of the coopers at work, and even gives you the opportunity to try it for yourself with a mini cask.

Accommodation

If you’re looking for somewhere to stay in Speyside, the Hillside Havens in Dufftown are a bit different, and would be a good location to start our South and East Speyside tour. At the other end of the luxury spectrum is Dalvey House in Forres; or if you’d like a bit of fresh air, the Links Lodge B&B in Lossiemouth sits right on the sea. The Craigellachie Hotel boasts the fantastic Quaich Bar and the Copper Dog pub, or try the quaint Highlander Inn in Craigellachie also home to a fine selection of whiskies. The recently opened Station Hotel in Rothes has beautiful bedrooms and a brilliant whisky bar. Finally, the Knockomie Inn in Forres is a cosy and comfortable place to relax and unwind.
