DistilleryTours Podcast - Aberlour

We're back from our podcast break with an interview with Rikki Scott, Visitor Centre Supervisor at the Aberlour Distillery in the heart of Speyside.

Rikki talks to us about avoiding the power of suggestion at a tasting, connecting people to a whisky through their own experience and the memories it brings back for them. From the smell of your mother’s hairspray to the look on your father’s face as he came home from work, different whiskies evoke something different for everyone.

Date with a Dram: Speyside Distillery

Speyside Distillery's 2021 Limited Edition Single Cask

Our Date with a Dram this month is with the Speyside Distillery, a privately owned, artisan distillery nestled in the foothills of the Cairngorm Mountains, only a stones’ throw from the River Spey itself. Drawing its water from the tributary River Tromie via an old mill lade, the distillery uses time-honoured hand distilling techniques to create a naturally sweet and fruity Single Malt spirit.

Speyside Distillery's 2021 Limited Edition Single Cask is an 8 year old, matured in an ex-Bourbon cask, and bottled at cask strength 60% ABV.

Only 300 bottles have been released, with an RRP of £98! Bright gold in appearance, there's a warm nose, light with delicate notes of summer flora and fruits. On the palate a complex mix of sweet notes - initial flavours of vanilla, honey and crème soda mingling with green apple. All balanced well and mellowing into a long finish with hints of spice and white pepper. Evocative of a warm summer evening.

Venue of the month: The Bon Accord

The Bon Accord in Glasgow

We're delighted to say that the world famous Bon Accord, ale house, malt whisky bar and whisky shop is now open!

What began as a pub specialising in real ale and pub grub, has been cultivated carefully over the years into a specialist whisky bar, and they've even won the UK Whisky Bar of the Year.

A family-run business, they sell more than 800 different real ales per year and we stock more than 400 whiskies on their gantry. Yet the quality of their selection does not suffer - they have many old and rare whiskies; the pinnacle of their collection being their 70-year-old Glenlivet.

They've even created their own online whisky shop!

Find out more about the Bon Accord on their dedicated page at DistilleryTours.scot and, if you're visiting, please adhere to Covid-19 travel restrictions.

Distillery of the Month: Annandale

Annandale Distillery

Rescued by David Thomson and Teresa Church in 2007, the once derelict Annandale Distillery sprang back into life on November 3rd, 2014.

Annandale's story and approach to whisky is well-documented by David and Teresa, who decided when they restored the Distillery to produce a peated malt (as it would have done historically) and an unpeated malt, with a common core of sensory characteristics that define them as being ‘Annandale’.

The result is their highly acclaimed, peated 'Man O’ Sword', and their fruity, unpeated 'Man O’ Words' single malts.

And we're delighted to say their tours are now running 7 days a week, including their Restoration Tour, which focuses on the spectacular story of the rebirth of the distillery - a £14 million project.

Can't make it to Annadale yet? Support them by buying a bottle direct from the Distillery.
